Artistic Approach

01

Materiality

This body of work focuses on exploring mark making and texture through the deliberate collision of vastly different mediums. By pairing the heavy, structural ridges of oil impasto with the unpredictable, bleeding flows of water colour, the pieces map a vivid conversation between control and fluid chance. This tactile depth is further layered with specialized printmaking techniques, utilizing the unique rolled surfaces of monoprints and the atmospheric, distressed qualities of solvent transfers to build complex, multi-dimensional surfaces across the collection.

02

Technique

Across these separate artworks, the collection explores distinct approaches to mark-making and texture by dedicating individual pieces to specific medium studies. The majority of the works focus on heavy oil paint applied in expressive, sculptural impasto brushstrokes that physically contrast with the final image. This dominant textured theme is punctuated by only one standalone piece that pairs flat, opaque gouache with thinners transfer graphics, and a single watercolor piece that isolates fluid transparency alongside delicate pencil work.

03

Process

In terms of creative process, these separate artworks serve as conceptual windows into a shared thematic origin, as most of the artworks are based on dreams. For the core body of work, the heavy oil paint features underlying sculptural elements that dictate the composition and provide essential spatial context for the imagery painted on top. In contrast, the single mixed-media piece uses flat, opaque gouache to visually pull the thinners transfer together, binding the solvent-distilled fragments into a unified narrative. Together with the standalone pencil and watercolor piece, the collection translates erratic dreamscapes into distinct tactile methodologies.
